The study is aimed at analysing the flouting of Grice’s Cooperative Principles and finding out the implicature of the flouting maxims. Descriptive qualitative method was employed. The data were analyzed by identifying the utterances based on Grice’s Cooperative Principle proposed by Grice (1975), classifying the flouting of maxims and finding the maxim that was mostly flouted in the video of Mata Najwa talk show. The findings show that the guest speaker of the show flouted all the maxims. The guest speaker flouted maxims through six manners that are giving more and lack information, saying something that lack of evidence, giving irrelevance responses, saying something ambiguous/unclear and giving unnecessary prolixity (verbosity). The study reveals that there are 1 occurrence of flouting the maxim of quality, 9 occurrences of flouting the maxim of quantity, 13 occurrences of flouting the maxim of manner, and 6 occurrences of flouting the maxim of quality. Maxim of manner is the most often flouted as it is indicated by obscure and unclear response

The teaching of speaking skills has become increasingly important in the English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) context. Nevertheless, lack of motivation, getting students to speak, and use of first language are the biggest challenges in developing speaking skills. Additionally, teachers’ dominance to talk in the classroom makes students become passive listeners. An alternative way of teaching for promoting students’ speaking skills can be found in cooperative learning since it provides the opportunity to practice English and create active learning atmosphere for students to learn by themselves and from their peers. However, little attention has been paid to conduct cooperative learning in developing speaking skills of secondary level especially in Indonesian context. Thus, this study aims to investigate how the techniques of cooperative learning develop students’ speaking skills and to find out benefits and challenges during the implementation of cooperative learning in one vocational school in Cimahi. The study employed mixed method design since both qualitative and quantitative data were collected. The data were obtained from classroom observations, questionnaires, semi structured interview and students’ spoken test. The results showed that despite some limitations; (1) the implementation of cooperative learning elements in each technique had facilitated students to develop their speaking skills especially in terms of their fluency, accuracy and confidence. This finding was also supported by statistical calculation using pair T-test which showed that there was a difference in the students’ speaking skills after they learned with cooperative learning techniques; (2) the benefits of cooperative learning techniques involved three main categories which were achievement, interpersonal relationships, psychological health and social competence;(3) nevertheless, time constraint leads to inadequate time to practice students’ speaking especially in terms of their grammar, to proper implementation the five elements of cooperative learning, and to teaching social skills; (4) thus, it is suggested that the future researchers can conduct the similar study in more meetings to make sure that the elements of cooperative learning and the social skills needed are applied in the teaching and learning process and to ensure that the students have more practice in the target language. This study focuses on flouting maxim uttered by characters in “UP!” movie. This study is aimed at analyzing types of flouting maxims performed by the characters and describing strategies of flouting maxims uttered by characters in the movie. In analyzing the types and strategies of flouting maxims of characters, Cutting’s theory (2002) is used. The researcher also employed qualitative research method to collect the data. The result showed two important findings. First, it was found that there are four types of flouting maxims in the movie. They are flouting maxims of quantity, quality, relation and manner. Flouting maxims of quality was rank first because the characters deliberately say something that is believed to be false. Second, there are ten strategies of flouting maxims found in the movie. They are giving too little information, giving too much information, hyperbole, metaphor, irony, banter, sarcasm, being irrelevant, changing the topic and being obscure. The occurrence of the strategy that mostly used to flout maxims was giving too much information. It happened because the characters always give too much information than what is required

Most of elementary teachers use grammar translation method in teaching English. Students are asked to memorize vocabularies and the grammatical pattern without knowing the context of using it. Meanwhile, young learners need to learn English grammar in context. By giving them context, there is an obvious reason for them to learn it. This research was aimed to investigate the use of M-U-F framework in improving students’ grammatical competence, and to find out the strengths and challenges of using M-U-F framework. M-U-F stands for Meaning, Use and Form. This framework assists young learners to develop their internal grammar through the opportunities to use and practice the language without neglecting the context of using it and also the pattern of the language. The research was conducted by using a quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent groups design. Two classes of fifth grade in one of the elementary school in Western Bandung were chosen as a sample. Class 5A was an experimental group and class 5B was a control group. Each of the class consists of 24 students. The result indicated that there was not a significant effect of MUF framework in improving students’ grammatical competence as indicated by a statistically posttest score of experimental group students which had a better grammar test score (M = 78.54, SE = 2.32) than the control group students (M = 75.00, SE = 2.43). However, the difference was not highly significant t (46) = 1.055, p < 0.05 with the effect size value r = 0.15. The findings from video recording showed that the meaningful context, purposeful and interesting activity that make students use the language and aware of its form became the strengths of M-U-F framework. Besides, the class management and limitation of time were the challenges of using M-U-F framework. The main conclusion that can be drawn from the research was that M-U-F Framework did not significantly improve students’ grammatical competence. However, it could encourage learners to learn English grammar in meaningful and interesting ways. As the suggestions, for teachers who are interested in using M-U-F framework, it is suggested to build the context which is familiar with the students. While for the further researchers, it is suggested to conduct the research in a long period of time

This study scrutinizes the phenomenon of misperception on adult EFL learners at STBA Technocrat. It aims to comprehend the sounds which are frequently misperceived as well as the types of misperception experienced by ten EFL learners in apprehending sound-alike words. This study is descriptive qualitative research that involves ten EFL learners majoring on English literature in semester six. The results show that EFL learners frequently misperceived vowels than consonants. Almost all of the participants experienced the three types of misperception, namely, deafness, mirage, and mutation, except for the one participant who did not experience mirage. The data show that there are several things that are able to influence participants’ perception. The first is the phonetics features of English speech sounds. According to the data, the writers discover that the participants experienced the misperception more towards sounds which have similarities on its phonetics features. The second is the phonological systems between English and Indonesian. The discoveries significantly show that the participants feel confused and are not familiar enough with the sounds that do not exist in their native language. The third is the inserted information. The more information is inserted, the less misperception will occur. The last is the participants’ grades of listening subjects (I-III). However, those grades could not be a benchmark of their ability of speech perception

This paper reports the finding of a study scrutinizing to what extent peer feedback in blended learning context improves students’ writing ability a well as how EFL learner perceive an online peer feedback on writing in blended learning context. The study utilized a descriptive qualitative method with instrument of observation, document analysis and questionnaires. The results show that the students writing ability have improved after the students received feedback from peers and incorporated those feedbacks to their final draft. The online peer feedback fostered students’ writing skills in terms of mechanic, content, organization and structures. Students’ perception of online peer feedback using Edmodo were also positive in terms of usefulness, easiness, and interest. The students also responded that this activity was very timesaving since the blended learning model facilitates the students to maximize the amount of time to engage in the writing process
